The DOT…otherwise known as the Dictionary of Occupational Titles

For all those wanting to become a Social Security Administration vocational expert, part of your additional research is to actually understand the textbooks that are available in the field. Unlike a true vocational education or collegiate preparation, there aren’t many courses out there (other than the VELaunchpad!) that set you up with this information. The primary source for everything right now as an SSAVE is the Dictionary of Occupational titles.…

Part 404 of CFR, Subpart P

By now if you’ve gone through all the posts here in Stroud Academy, you been able to see that we’ve introduced the concept of the Social Security Administration vocational expert.  This includes what it is and what they do. We’ve then brought in the role that they play and their part in the overall disability process, giving you a glimpse of what that process looks like from the perspective of…

Part 404 of CFR, Subpart J, part 2…Whew!

During our last session we introduced subpart J of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) part 404 as really meeting the nuts and bolts of what a SSA VE or Social Security Administration vocational expert does on a day-to-day basis.  Subpart J is what actually gets us into the role..meaning how SSAVEs perform the role.  We stopped at the section starting in the actual hearing before an administrative law judge…

Part 404 of CFR, Subpart J, part 1…Wow!

Over the last few posts, we’ve introduced the different regulations that the Social Security Administration uses to provide an overview and introduction to guidance for Social Security Administration Vocational Experts (SSAVE) as they enter this world of disability determinations. We covered subparts D&H under part 404 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and these set the stage as an introduction into overall background of the disability process. Today, we…

Part 404 of the Code of Federal Regulations…subpart H

What about the age of the claimant during the Disability Determination process?  Does it matter? Last time we talked about Subpart D and introduced the concept of understanding all of these Social Security regulations.  We also intro’d how they interact and relate as an important part of what becoming a Social Security Administration Vocational Expert (SSAVE) is and that continues today with for next piece in the series on regulations. …

Part 404 of the Code of Federal Regulations…subpart D

There are few things sexier than regulations!!! Over the last few weeks we’ve talked about the role of a Social Security Vocational Expert in relation to the duties they perform with the Social Security Administration. In order to get to the next level, you really have to understand the regulations that the Social Security Administration adheres to. This starts up front with the Code of Federal Regulations, part 404.  The…

Age and Disability…the SSA difference

What about the age of the claimant during the Disability Determination process?  Does it matter?  Absolutely!  The age of the claimant, combined with the level and type of previous work, will play a huge part in what happens during the Appeals stage of the SSA Disability Determination Process.  This means the impartial witness duties of the Social Security Vocational Expert (SSAVE) must also consider the age of the claimant when…

SSA and the Disability Hearing

What are you getting into? The ability to intern or shadow possible future professions sometimes helps one make the decision if it is the line of work they would like to go into.  Performing duties as an impartial witness for the Social Security Administration (SSA) as a Social Security Vocational Expert (SSAVE) is no different.  Unfortunately, you cannot get into one of these hearings…or listen to one…due to privacy act…

Social Security and the Appeals Council

The Appeals Council is the final step under the Social Security Administration Disability Determination process that a claimant can request access to for a decision.  The Social Security Vocational Expert is not normally a part of this process but could sometime receive a request for a Remand study or Interrogatory as discussed earlier.  The reason for this is to support or provide an impartial view that perhaps wasn’t properly spelled…

Appeals and the Social Security Administration

Inevitably, claimants will lose their case – especially during the Initial and Reconsideration stages of the SSA Disability Determination Process.  That takes the claimant into the Hearing stages, where the case is laid out before the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).  This person then has the authority to render a “de novo” decision – meaning not bound by any prior decisions and taking into account all aspects of a claimant’s record. …
